Vintage Silk Chapan or Turkoman Jacket
Ref: 5402
An authentic vintage chapan or Turkoman jacket, this was traditional wear for Uzbek and Turkoman tribal people and is hand-woven, the lining is usually cotton, subtle stitchwork decorates the collar and the sleeves or arms are normally as here very long, the piece often being worn as a cape and never with pockets, accoutrements were attached to the belt or were in woven purses and pockets attached to the horse.
Chapans were made famous in the 2000s by the Afghan President Hamid Karzai, who later donated one of his to the British Museum, in a period of conflict with the Taliban Karzai’s dress was taken to be a symbolic gesture towards the traditions of his country and also could be seen as a risposte to the austere white robes of the Taliban, & a hint to the debate as to the dress of Mohammed who some believe wore white whilst others suggest favoured a symbolic & life affirming green.
