Antique Fruitwood Counter Table
Ref: 4039
A fantastic example of a Central European counter table or shepherd's pay table, it could be the best one you will ever see. These tables are for dining in a wealthy peasant farmhouse but were also used as a head shepherd's till and pay station. There is a drawer and the top slides open to an interior compartment but this can be locked with the key.
What makes this example particularly exceptional is the very heavy walnut top which is over 2" thick and a two-man lift. The condition is also very good - normally these tables have replacement parts this one not, it is all there. A similar but inferior example came up at auction at Sotheby's Olympia in 2003 with an estimate of between £5 to 8,000 (at the time up to 12,000 euros).
The height at 30" is perfect for sitting around. These types of tables are often awkward but here the over-hang all around is substantial and accommodating. For an alpine or holiday chalet or smaller country residence this table could be an ideal diner, compact but with the quality of the best big refectory table you might see.
