Virgin Mary in Red Shawl with Green Dots
Ref: 3871
An icon reverse painted on thin glass in original pine frame from Transylvania. These were made by peasants and sold at markets to brighten the homes of the poor.
A fascinating of example of Eastern European folk art, the Romanian peasant takes just the outline of the composition of an old religious print and with no attempt to match the technical competence of the original in the style of representation; instead the folk artist gives free rein to an innate sense of flat colour decoration producing through free hand wavy lines and spots on blocks of colour an effect quite distant from European Christian art post-Giotto and something much more akin to Eastern textile or a painted ceramic or canvas by disciple of Picasso.
