St Nicholas Folk Art Reverse Painting on Glass
Ref: 5631
Reverse paintings on glass were a commonplace folk art in Eastern Europe as sheets of glass were cheaper to use than prepared wooden boards, they leant themselves to a flat decorative and abstract style of painting, here we see a peasant work, a copy of a religious print, on glass sheet and in original pine and painted frame. VGC. This was made in Transylvania in cottage factories and several versions of same image made but with colour and detail varying. It would have been sold at a market and hung on the wall or on a shelf in the home of a Romanian peasant. St Nicholas as the bringer of gifts was one of their more popular saints.
