Naive Religious Scene, The Christ Child Asleep on Cross
Ref: 7094
Folk art in Central and Eastern Europe is often akin to Outsider art owing to it’s having been done by untrained artists with none or little grasp of anatomical accuracy or perspective and this can give a slightly spooky quality to some of their work. This might also seem a slightly bizarre subject matter but it is a known one - the christ Immanuel or Infant asleep on the cross, a prefiguring of his mortal death but also a play on concepts of sleep/waking/dream/reality/mortal existence and eternity, it was a popular subject in early 17th century Catholic art and William Blake also did his own version. This is oil on card. Found in Transylvania.
