"The Diecasters" oil on canvas by L.F.Herbert
Ref: 3903
A good painting by the Oxford poet and painter L.F. Herbert, nicely framed and titled "The Diecasters". Herbert painted in a wide range of subject matters from mythological, Christian religious, landscape, still life and here we see him in romantic working class mode showing an appreciation of the team-work and fortitude required by skilled labouring men working in the dangerous environment of the furnace pouring heavy molten alloy metals into large square dies.
Furnaces apart the painting has a warmth and sensuality and themes similar to those found in D.H. Lawrence's work are explored, these are "The Diecasters", the figures are not individualised but achieve identity and selfhood through the annulment of their selves in this infernal yet brotherly employment.
