Paintings Pre 1900 » Two Handled Painted, Enamelled & Gilded Bowl
Ref: 5765
The spirit of the Renaissance lives on in this finely decorated enamelled bowl or cup, made of copper with en grisaille (in other words, monochromatic shades of grey) painting on a black ground dramatically & exquisitely rendering in miniature in the middle an image of virgin & child whilst surrounding it in the scallops of the hexafoil bowl are rustic scenes of mills & other dwellings.
On the reverse are two s-shaped handles, with, on the hexagonal base a painting of rustic mill or barn, surrounded by translucent enamels in polychrome with flowers.
Back in the day before we invented the idea of the artist as a tortured genius with a story to tell painters were decorators whether they were painting a church ceiling or a small fine object like this, and we can easily see here the hand of a master, as the Ashmolean have confirmed this is the work of Jacques Laudin I (1627-9) or his nephew, whose work is often barely distinguishable, Jacques Laudin II (1663-1729).
A number of similar pieces survive and are in museums in Limoges, Dijon, also the V & A, a circular version is in the Ashmolean, there is one with hexafoil rim like this in the Fitzwilliam, this has very similar reverse decoration to ours & for this reason their experts attribute it to Jacques Laudin I.
