Ref: 1950
A superb and vibrant and really detailed icon on glass (reverse painted) by a master from Serbia.
It dates from the early to mid 19th century.
This work is reminiscent of a similarly good icon on glass of St George in Grabowski′s "Sztuka Ludowa w Europie" Arkady, 1978). It may be by the same hand. One clue in identifying icons is the size of the glass plate and the frame size and style which point to a certain centre of production and ultimately point to the size of house and wealth of the peasant client. The master painters also had their distinctive styles which were sometimes family styles as often the apprenticeship passed down to sons and daughters. In this work apart from the characteristic large and lively composition with plenty of incident and the re-assuringly happy naive faces we also see something unusual, St George being crowned by flanking angels, as he is being in the Grabowski example. This work has two cracks which have been repaired - this is common and does not effect the value hugely, for such delicate pieces as these to have survived at all after 200 yrs is rare, and it still ranks as museum quality.
