Paintings Pre 1900 » Portrait of Dryden after Kneller
Ref: 3852
There are two paintings known of the poet, John Dryden (1631 - 1700,) by Sir Godfrey Kneller (1646 - 1723) that date from the later 1690s, one is in the National Portrait Gallery and one is in Trinity College, Cambridge.
Dryden's reputation remained strong during the mid-part of the 18th century and these two portraits were copied mainly by engravers but also in oils and it would be fair to assume that this oil on canvas is a well executed version "after Kneller" and dating from the first half of the 18th century.
Having said that the portrait is sufficiently different to both known Kneller portraits and different to the print versions to ask the question whether this could be a version of a third portrait or a third portrait itself.
