A large oval oil on canvas of peasant girl with a basket of cherries in a country setting, in rare original condition, English, circa 1700. The image of Arcadia, the paradise of classical mythology was central to the thinking of the landed gentry and their estate architects, gardeners and decorators in this period, great houses in large grounds were modelled on Italian villas complexes and painted images like the frescoes discovered from the Roman period were ‘de rigour’ and carried the appropriate messages of suggestive of innocence, earthly pleasure and the bounty of nature. The frame itself which is original and very good condition worth half the price alone.
