Paintings Post 1900 » "Primitive Girl with Red Dress & Cat"
Ref: 5789
A homage to probably the most famous American primitive or folk portrait painter, Ammi Phillips (1788-1865), (a man & whose name is pronounced Ah-mee), and to one of his most famous works depicting a girl in a red dress with her dog and cat. It is a painting that is widely available as a print and probably also reproductions in oil on canvas can be bought. This is evidently not one of those though, it’s an original oil on canvas finely painted, clearly a copy of the original but with some crucial differences, the dog sitting at the seat of the chair is missing, and curiously the girl wears a choker with bracelet and not a coral necklace as in the original. The stamp to the back of the canvas suggests the painting may date to the 1920s - this is just the time when American folk art was being discovered and when it was beginning to be collected by the likes of the Roosevelts but also by artists themselves such as Charles Sheeler & others & it’s plausible to see this is a homage to Phillips by a competent Modern artist.
