Paintings Post 1900 » Large Modernist Nordic Light Oil on Canvas by Torsleff
Ref: 3415
A terrific large sea/cliff view oil on canvas by renowned Danish painter, August Torselff (1884-1968) - this painting's full title is topographical, "View from the East Coast of Jutland, at Blommehaven, Skade Bakker", it captures a moment of typical Nordic light and serenity, it is evening or morning with a sliver of moon visible over the quiet coastline as a sailboat slips by. The work is signed "Torsleff", it is large scale, mantelpiece size, being almost 5ft wide, with frame.
Torsleff is a celebrated artist in his native country and abroad, according to the evidence of his catalogue, he was a prolific portrait painter and often in a somewhat garish Modernist style, this could be seen as the commercial and public face of his art. In this early work we see the other side of the artist, the more reflective side, in a poetic vision of place that seems typically Scandinavian.
