Ref: 5846
A large Ethiopian popular painting, on linen, applied to board, and framed, done in traditional almost child-like Ethiopian folk art style. Great value for the quality.
Ethiopian popular painting goes back many centuries and was chiefly religious, and Coptic christian, just as one saw in the times of primitive Italians, religious art consisted of story telling narrative pieces but done not on plaster fresco style but rather on linen that was then applied to the mud walls of churches.
In more modern times the same story telling approach was applied to historical subjects and foremostly to the Ethiopian struggle for independence & their ultimately victorious resistance to colonial threats. This piece relates to a famous battle in that struggle which a little research could no doubt elucidate.
Ethiopia second half of 20th cent.
