A large mid-20th century Impressionist style oil on canvas showing a bright colourful summer scene in the city of Munkacs (or Mukachevo as it is now known) an informal scene and yet working in the classic landmark view of the 14th century "hrad" or castle - the city is an important centre of a region known as Sub-Carpathian Rus and has been disputed territory having been part of Hungary and also Czechoslovakia during large parts of the first half of the twentieth century before becoming a part of Soviet Ukraine after the War. Famous for its Jewish connections Munkacs also had its fine art traditions and was actually the birthplace of the most celebrated of all Hungarian painters, Mihaily Munkacs who named himself after the place.
