Oil on Oak Panel, "La Reverie"
Ref: 3893
A small oil on oak panel showing a noble lady in her private chambers "perdu dans ses reveries". There are obvious erotic connotations and sensuality in subject and style.
It probably dates to early 1700s and would have been made for private consumption, a piece for the boudoir itself and perhaps kept in a bureau.
There are some surface scratches. The piece is as found and came from a house in Stratford upon Avon.
Later in the 18th century French painters explored similar themes in more public works. More than 100 yrs later Gustave Courbet took things a little further in his proto-Freudian "Le Sommeil".
