Folk Art oil on canvas "Cavalier & Spaniel"
Ref: 3750
A primitive folk art oil on canvas probably dating to 18th century - depicting a cavalier or King Charles himself with one of his spaniels. Re-framed. Legend has it that King Charles was so impressed with this breed and their faithfulness as companions that he decreed they should not be denied entry to any tavern in the land nor indeed to any public place. The smoke blackened back of this work not to say the characteristic primitive short hand style of the execution suggests that this may have been the work of a sign painter. Very old pub signs were often done on canvas and then at a later date hung inside the pub. The exterior is in good original condition it probably had a light clean when framed but not spoiling it at all the original surface of the paint which has a pleasing crackle of age.
