Trio of Antique White Pots
Ref: 5878
The smooth white surfaces of these pots from Hatay is characteristic so too their almost anthropomorphic feminine quality, they remind me of the white washed domed village churches of Cyprus or of ancient figurines & indeed they do come from that part of the Mediterranean, on the mainland in the ancient region of Antakya, part of Modern day Turkey, but a disputed region of Arab, Armenian and Turkish, it is the shared geomorphology of the Troodos & the ranges of the mainland which creates this unique look. Amongst my favourite of European pots as good inside as out.
The large one here 80cm is £400, the very nice bulbous one is 60cm high & £350, and the smaller at 45cm is £110. Rare.
Hatay/The Levant early 20th cent.
