Rare Early Stoneware Pot with Rope-Twist
Ref: 6510
Great form, colour, surface and poise to this sculptural and early stoneware piece, it ticks a lot of boxes, it’s from Byzantium (modern day Istanbul), & must have been sitting in some quiet corner terrace or yard or field for centuries quietly absorbing wind and rain and acquiring this notable atmosphere of age. A piece like this they call ‘Roma’ or Byzantine since up until the Ottoman arrival in the 15th century the city was the centre of a Roman Christian culture but Greek speaking too so in some ways it’s a Greek pot. It’s heavy and thick walled and has a classical rope-twist decoration around the neck and criss-cross design to top. It could be as much as 2000 years old.
Roman Byzantium pre-1000 AD.
