Virgin & Child Folk Painting on Glass
Ref: 4920
Prints of German or Saxon origin were in circulation in Transylvania in the 19th and early 20th cent. and these provided the source material for these folk copies produced by reverse painting on thin glass panels.
The subject matter and look was entirely ‘translated” into the folk idiom, no longer dreary & serious, what was produced by the untrained peasant painters was colourful, decorative, full of feeling and quite original in it’s “modernist type” patterning and visual ideas. Fresh, appealing and affordable.
