The Mystic Wine Press
Ref: 4453
A folk art reverse painting on glass from Romania, in pine frame, dating probably to the later 19th century. Jesus in the Gospels said “I am the vine, ye are the branches”, this was a popular theme in the folk tradition of icon painting in
Transylvania. Here as in the early 19th century glass icons from Nicula, Christ has a vine growing from his side, his tomb appears to be a wooden Romanian dowry chest with geometric carving & he holds the Chalice offering his blood, the wine. The magical or mystical aspect of the Eucharist is brought out in the typical format of these icons, in which the figure of Christ is surrounded by abstract forms and in intense deep colours, blacks, purples and crimsons.
