Superb Hungarian Folk Art "Cifre" Tulip Box
Ref: 3537
An antique marriage trunk, a humble pine coffer but a piece raised to the level of museum quality folk art by skilful painted decoration. This so-called "Cifre" style tulip painting is coded to the tribe and full of symbolism, it has an almost hallucinogenic richness of colour and design and is not unlike Australian aboriginal painting in it's very deliberate concoction of forms, lines and dots. This style of folk art amongst the Hungarian tribes in Transylvania continued well into the 20th century - and the quality was good as the work was done by members of the same families for generations. The earlier works however, like this one, are particularly good in their painterly expression and colouring.
