A superior quality folk painted marriage box from the Land of the Kalota, the Hungarian Calvanist community in Central Transylvania, famed for their painted furniture. You can see the quality here is the pilasters to the sides and the elegant shaped feet, the painting is a tour de force and is signed K 1954 BE this means 'made' (i.e. Keszult) in 1954 and BE is probably the name of the artist. The condition is excellent owing to the fact that these pieces resided in the clean room with the other dowry pieces and were never used. If any of our folk art furniture is likely to increase in the years to come it will be these signed masterworks of European folk art.
