"St Nicholas" 'Folk Painting on Glass

A colourful reverse painted icon on glass by a master painter of the school of Brasov, different styles of painting on glass developed in different parts of Transylvania, those of Scheii and Fagaras near to Brasov are the most wildly colourful, abstract and folky, and this one is typical. It is very good condition and is in its original pine case with pine frame painted in walnut stain and grained with wavy lines.
St Nicholas is an important saint amongst the country people throughout Europe and Russia, his festival day in Romania and Hungary was on December 5th when children put out their boots at night and hoped to receive gifts.
