St George Icon on Glass
Ref: 3290
An early Romanian icon reverse painted onto glass panel from the village of Nicula, the birthplace of the 18th and 19th century folk tradition. The painters of Nicula had a wonderful naïve style, and sense of decoration, without training or knowledge of persective - their visual solutions, faces in profile, and so on, echo Giotto or later Modernist avant garde painters.
The St Georges are one of the most saught after types of these icons, less "religious" in subject matter but also charming with their naïve depiction of creatures, the dragon or serpent and the saint's white steed, a friendlier cousin to those in Picasso's Guernica.
This piece is in original pine frame and wooden case. It can hang on a wall.
