St George & the Dragon Popular Glass Painting
Ref: 4630
One of the most popular saints in Eastern Europe and especially in Romania was St George, think of how common the name George and it’s derivatives are in that part of Europe, to the peasants whose Christian belief was intertwined with pagan beliefs he was a god associated with fertility.
An icon like this was cheaply made, reverse painted on a thin sheet of glass and framed with a paper back in a painted and combed pine frame. These were made in cottage factories by peasants turned craft artists and then sold at markets to the peasantry themselves and they valued them highly, they provided colour in their homes or hovels, and promoted good fortune.
