Shepherd’s Wooden Churn with Folk Art Carving
Ref: 4816
A nice piece for the collector from the Hutsul shepherd villages, a circular churn, made of pine boards and coopered in hardwood, superb condition. This would have been hand-cranked and is basically for spinning the milk to make butter, yoghurt, cheese. Note how for the herders in the mountains even basic food production and everyday life was governed by magic belief and superstition, the carved compass circle on the front here ensured the food did not spoil and was free from ‘malign influences’.
This is a rare piece of folk art and very good condition.
