A wonderfully decorative narrative painting done with mineral and plant based colours on a rustic hand-made paper scroll, eight scenes framed with borders of red flowers give a pastoral feel, against a background of artfully sponged trees and foliage, a romance tale involving priests, parents and lovers unfolds and tragedy is averted by the intercession of a god, probably Shiva.
A piece like this may have been purchased by pilgrims from the temple on a festive occasion, the simple pictorial religious and moral message was accessible even to those without literacy. This piece could be kept as a scroll, a picture book to access when desired, or it could be framed as whole or in parts.
