Ref: 3559
A rare large carved and painted hewn coffer from the shepherd culture of the Drava region in North East Croatia. This area extends over the border into the Baranya region of Hungary. The tomb like form shows these marriage chests belong to the same family group as the Baranya arcs, see ref. 3558, but the geometric symbols differ so too most notably and to startling decorative effect the colour.
This piece like ref.3558 is superb condition and warrants the description "museum quality" - indeed when a piece like this comes up for sale in Hungary museums will compete to buy and the prices can go very high.
