An early Baroque primitive carved figure of the Virgin in original paint, unusual in that it stands on it’s original decorative wooden plinth with carved angels (or winged souls), this was acquired recently from a religious house in Ireland, and from a chapel dating to the early 16th century, the simple features of the face and primitive nature of the carving support the interpretation that this could be local work & if so it would be a remarkable and early example of Irish folk art.
