Primitive Folk Art Painting of Steamship with Carnations
Ref: 6259
Wonderfully vivid and naive ship portrait with border of flowers on wood panel. This was originally on the inside lid of a dowry chest. There is a folk tradition of painting on mariner’s chests in Western Europe especially UK but these paintings were done on bridal boxes in Anatolia, marriage often entailed leaving home and travelling along the coast to a new village and so these folk paintings symbolised romance, adventure, the sensual fulfilment of the life to come.
