Portrait of a Lady in Neo-Classical Style
Ref: 5017
A delightful small portrait oil on canvas by unknown hand, probably circa 1810 & Swedish Pomerania, present day Germany & Poland, the sitter is pictured in the manner of time, “a la Greque”, in a plain white dress, the bodice finishes just below the bosom & hangs from there, arms are revealed, the hair unbonneted, & in free, loose curls. The overall effect of sensuality, simplicity & naturalism is further enhanced by the illusion of soft natural daylight, from the left-hand side, in this period culture rejected the artifice of the past, it was a period of social change in Europe, when the unalloyed & unadorned was what artists strove to achieve, & so as we have here this provincial artist is able to achieve a touching realism & quiet lyrical effect in their commission. The painting is sensitively cleaned & relined & gallery condition.
