Pair of Tin Glaze Hand-Painted Dishes
Ref: 4877
A pair of glazed earthenware or tin-glaze hand-painted dishes or porringers, very good condition, attractive blue, green and white colouring, signed to back ‘Nagykapus’ meaning they are likely to have come from a Hungarian workshop in Transylvania and from the village of Nagykapus or the Big Gate, one of three Saxon German villages or settlements in this part of Transylvania, dating back to the introduction of the Teutonic Knights to this region in the Middle Ages to provide a defence against Eastern Invasions. Nagykapus or Gros Kopisch as the Germans call it has a famous fortified church dominating the village as do the two other nearby Saxon villages and these make up a UNESCO world heritage site. Peasants from this region would visit on market days & foreign tourists & it is likely these would have been bought by one of them on market day as a souvenir of renowned place.
