Painted Marriage Box with Love Heart and Flowers
Ref: 4875
Boxes like this were made for marriages and the symbolism (see our Instagram post) of the central heart motif entwined in a busy profusion of flowers and colourful abstract forms relates matrimony to cosmic & natural fecundity.
Many people from the Bukovina where this box came from emigrated to Canada in this period (1890-1920) and so very similar boxes to this one have been found in Western Canada and they call them "immigrant’s chests"! We might use this as a coffee table or everyday storage, in Canada the piece would be in the house of a collector or in a museum, but easily have been made by the same hand!
