Painted & Carved Trampwork Frame
Ref: 4727
A very choice example of the Central and Eastern European tradition of so-called trampwork art, this is name coined by American folk art enthusiasts based on the idea that frames and others objects made in this style were the creation of travelling hobos. In all likelihood it was a style of country making that was translated to America by German and other European immigrants.
This is a very good condition example with carved acorns and stars and family portraits intact. The science of photography and the rise of commercial studios offering portraiture boosted the manufacture of home-made frames at this time.
