Naive Folk Painting of Steamer on Yellow Ground
Ref: 6122
A rare decorative folk painting of steamer-sailboat on pine panel, originally a painting done on the inside of the lid of a peasant bridal box, these paintings are in quite a different tradition to mariner’s paintings of boats on travelling trunks, in the Anatolian or Turkish tradition the boxes in question would have accompanied a newly wed on her journey along the coast to a new home, but the boat represented adventure, departure, the optimism of a new life. There is no attempt either as in the British tradition to give local details of waves or coastline, these works instead are highly colourful and as here almost abstract. The broad swathe of yellow is meant to represent joy, happiness in the fulfilment of married life, most dowry box lid paintings are highly decorative and express feelings through colour rather than being descriptive.
