Magyar Embroidered Woollen Coat or Cape
Ref: 5967
A traditional Hungarian herdsman’s coat or cape, these wd often be worn over the shoulders, made of wool or felt and with intricate embroidery in ancient motifs of ram’s horns and tulips. Only the well to-do country shepherd’s and livestock owners could afford one of these and the fancier the better. They are called ‘cifraszur’ which essentially means' fancy (or highly decorated) cape'. This one dates to the 1920s. Similar examples are in the Met Museum in New York bought in the 1920s on ethnographic trips.
