“Land of Milk & Honey” Naive School
Ref: 4479
An oil on canvas attached to board in naive style describing a rolling bucolic farmland landscape.
There are orchards and vineyards, a red barn, a ‘cortijo” white painted farmhouse, an ancient fortified dwelling, a rider on a grey mare heading for the river crossing…it’s like a scene of Douanier Rousseau, or somewhat reminiscent of Breugel’s Land of Cockayne, a dream-like picture of an imagined land of fertility and plenty. Could it be New Mexico, or California, or is it an old world scene? It’s a signed work, attached at later date to board, and with traditional style frame, as found condition, and no provenance. We have fancily titled it “Land of Milk & Honey” after the “American Dream’ of Lennie & George in Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men”.
