Joy of Chrysanthemums
Ref: 2762
An appealing primitive oil on canvas, over 100 yrs old, showing a glazed earthenware dish with vibrant chrysanthemums in purples, reds, yellow and white. Chrysanthemums were popular as a gift on Mother's Day and this oil on canvas from France is signed in pencil to the reverse
indicating that it was a gift to a "grand mere". It comes from Epernay where the great champagne houses are and is dated 3 June 1909. There is a reference to a chateaux but it is hard to make out. As a colour composition the painting is fresh, the colourful flowers executed in the spirit of Van Gogh sit well with the scumbly typically French violet grey ground colour. You can imagine it looking at home on the pale flaky wall of an old chateaux interior.
Unframed but stretched onto original pine frame and good condition.
