Group of Painted Indian Clay Figures
Ref: 4978
Modelling miniature figures is an ancient tradition across the East but these figures are a specific genre of Indian folk art production, made in the colonial period, in the centres of Lucknow, Krishnanagar & Poona, they were largely made as souvenirs or toys, in art schools and sometimes by prisoners, their educational function was to represent Indian society as consisting of various “types”, modern day anthropologists and historians read into them a tableau or vision of how the colonial rulers would like things to be, a pacified peoples who knew their place, nevertheless they can also be appreciated as finely made works & full of character, combining as they do Western representational style with an indigenous flair for colour & expression.
These date to the late 19th century.
