Group of 4 Black Fired Pottery Vessels
Ref: 4857
A group of 4 black fired pots, some flaking on the two examples at either end, but they are very old. Pots like this were for domestic use. The black look was achieved by baking the pots in the kiln in the normal way and then adding with some 20 minutes remaining wet straw and wood and then shutting down the vents of the kiln, in this way creating a dense moist black smoke which would bind with the surface of the pots. They were then polished with smooth pebbles, incised with subtle geometric designs and sometimes coated with oil or alcohol to increase the sheen. A form of pottery making that was found in certain areas across Europe and since the Neolithic.
