Folk Painted Pine Wedding Chest

A very good condition folk painted marriage box or chest from the famous Kaloteszeg area. This is an area of around 40 villages inhabited traditionally by mostly Hungarian Calvinists. In the 1870s the area was ‘discovered' by artists and intellectuals from the Hungarian middle classes and the folk culture of the area, comprising of folk costumes and embroidery, painted furniture, wood carving and music, has been celebrated ever since.
This is a very good example of a painted box made and painted by local craftsman for a marriage in the early 20th century. Clean to interior and painted on sides and top.
