Exceptional Marriage Box with Folk Painted Interior
Ref: 5854
One of the best Ottoman marriage chests we’ve ever seen, the front and sides in original green paint with brass studs, the decorative lock plate and iron strapping are actually both painted in black, indicative of this being a peasant piece, made on a small budget, but how rich in colour and feeling is the folk painted interior with floral design and blue vases, these interior lid paintings were intended for the private consumption of the bride and symbolised the sensual fulfilment and paradise of married life.
