Ref: 4314
A superb quality and top notch example of painted marriage chest from the Kaloteszeg, the ethnically Hungarian traditional folk lands of Transylvania, famous for their textiles, painted furniture and traditional folk culture which was preserved well into the 20th century.
This box was painted in 1945 as the date to the front shows, the colours are nicely muted now, faded by time. The box may be earlier as these pieces were often re-painted for a new marriage in a family.
The flower painting is regarded as symbolic and tradition bound. There are two mirrors to the front of the box and these avert the evil eye and so promote good fortune too..
The area where this box comes from is called the Fancy Country. It’s clean to the interior with candle box and could be used in the house.
