Ref: 3558
A superb condition dowry box or coffer from the south of Hungary - these style of hewn arcs or chests are found throughout Hungary and indeed throughout Europe and associated with hill dwelling shepherd cultures whose beliefs and traditions are rooted in the mists of Time. This particular regional variant is one of the most beautiful with its form imitative of a ancient sarcophagus & it's geometric carving finished in characteristic black & brown paint that marries well with the old wood patinas - being made of beech these are often not in the best condition but this one we have here is and that is what makes it such a good find.
