Ref: 5266
A small carved wooden coffer, made of adzed boards, slatted and pegged in early style, this would probably have been a dowry box for jewellery, keepsakes and other personal artefacts. The front is carved with an unusual arrangement of hatching and lightening bolts, these can be viewed as ‘lines of power’ making up a vibrant design with the aim of deterring wrongful possession of the contents of the box, we can call it protective magic, an important aspect of country life in the folklore of the people. This box is fully restored. Rich patina and good condition.
