Russia distaffs can lay claim to be one of the most extraordinary expressions of old European folk art and of these one of the most beautiful and fascinating are these types from the far North. Made by descendants of the Old Believers exiled by Peter the Great their style of depiction relates directly to 17th century manuscript illumination from Novgorod. Finely crafted from a single piece of wood and painted like an icon, the details are all symbolic, the red horse, the groom, the "terem" or bride′s house, much has been written relating these detail to Easter and wedding traditions.
