Europe » Painted Pine Mortar & Fruitwood Pestle
Ref: 3579
In certain remote parts of the Carpathian mountains you can find these large mortar and pestles and this may be for mashing maize, the main ingredient in the traditional porridge-like dish, polenta.
The construction of the vessel or mortar is primitive (boarded) but this example may be less than one hundred years old. It is very good condition and painted green. The pestle is worth the ticket price alone being a large two handled example made of polished and worn dark fruitwood.
