Not your everyday piece, a large pine marriage box made for a castle or big farmhouse, the style of the box with the panelled front and the very large candle box suggests Central Europe origins, and a date of late 17th or early 18th century. The decoration in the panels of compass circles or pin-wheels is very traditional and associated with good luck and protection against evil influence and possession. The boxes remember contained a person’s most private and personal items of clothing and jewellery.
