Ref: 5083
A wonderful and very good condition marriage coffer or antique pine dowry box painted on all four sides with a traditional design in red, white, and pink, with flowers and birds, probably peacocks. These profusely painted marriage boxes we have featured regularly on our website and they only come from one small region of Transylvania inhabited by Hungarian peoples whose folk costume, and painted furniture linked to marriage customs were famous.
This box dates from the 19th century and is pine and was probably painted in a blue ground design originally then later in this way for a further family marriage, circa 1920.
