The geometrical rectangular design and shallowness are typical of Italian influenced peasant furniture that appears in the 17th century, a continuation of late Medieval furniture forms, note the wonderfully bold sledge feet.
The floral decoration is a naive rendering of pendant flowering barley or vine and again is a Renaissance motif.
There is a functioning lock and key, the top horizontal panel is a painted board that slots in, to the interior shelves can be accommodated. There is 53cm interior front to back.
